STEM Education Outreach Project with Bay Area Scientists Inspire Students (BASIS)

Making Science Fun and Engaging with BASIS (Bay Area Scientists Inspire Students)

The newest Academy-sponsored project, a partnership between the Academy, BASIS,and the non-profit Community Resources for Science(link is external), offers Academy members an opportunity to lend their expertise and strengthen science instruction in local K-12 schools through hands-on, experiential lessons and activities.

Engagement opportunities for Emeriti may include:

  • Mentor grad student teams developing their outreach activities for K-8 classes;
  • Recruit your department colleagues and others to increase participation in BASIS;
  • Present talks, Q & A sessions on topics in science or engineering for local educators during professional development sessions;
  • Lead hands-on science lessons in local elementary school classes (virtual  in the fall, perhaps back to in person in 2022);
  • Provide informal career mentoring sessions for grad students & postdocs.
