Based upon teaching Freshman Seminars, I am reminded of the challenges associated with finding a major that fully motivates student learning. In this age of social media, it seems timely to build a video library that captures the early interests and passions of faculty in brief 5-minute videos for students to access online. Viewing such videos might help students think about a traditional or non-traditional major, consider the prospects of one or more faculty mentors, and make more efficient use of their time on campus as well as more targeted choices of relevant courses inside and outside of a major. A student assisted project would include soliciting videos (with or without interviews) by building a set of questions that faculty might address in the video, assisting with editing the videos and designing a website for easy student access, including a marketing plan to reach lower-division students as well as high school students.
