I am part of a project where we use advanced sensing technologies embedded in the fabric of buildings to develop a simulation-powered Building Management System that can detect the presence and activities of the people who use the building. It is intended to help coordinate distributed decision-making activities by creating an overall “awareness” of the current state of the facility and analyze the impact of simulated alternative future actions of each user of the building, in every space, simultaneously. We demonstrate the benefits of this approach in a hypothetical application involving the Cardiac Catheterization Lab (CCL) at St. Bernardine Medical Center (SBMC) in Southern California.
